Late Dr. M. V. Shetty, MS, FRCS, FREPS (1917-1976) was an eminent Surgeon and Professor of Surgery at Mangalore and was popularly known as a sincere doctor to his patients, a respected colleague to his fellow doctors and an excellent professor to his students. He had strength of conviction and lived up to his humane beliefs in practice.
Outside his clinical practice, he did social work in building up the Home Guards and promoting awareness of remedial treatment for physical disabilities. He brought about a revolution in Mangalore, in the early sixties, by making the disabled feel equal to normal people. He was a lover of music and was an exponent in Tabla playing. He believed in the disciplined training of young people, be it in vocational or professional courses of study and always dealt with youngsters in a humorous and understanding manner. He was a person to whom people turned to for solutions and they were never disappointed. For his noble work he was awarded with Presidents Gold Medal at the 28th Republic Day Celebration at New Delhi.
In memory of Dr.M. V. Shetty a Trust was founded in the year 1985. The Declaration of the Trust was registered Vide no.35/1985-86 on 17th of October 1985, as Dr. M. V. Shetty Memorial Trust ® with Dr. M. Ramgopal Shetty, an eminent Vascular Surgeon, Mangalore, Sri. K.Muthaya Shetty, an Industrialist from Bangalore and Mrs. Leelavathi Shetty of Mangalore as the Trustees. One of the objectives of the Trust is to open, run, continue educational and vocational institutions in healthy surroundings.
The Trust came forward to establish a College of Nursing in the year 1987. In 1988 the Trust started the Institute of Professional Sciences and management which initiated a Bachelor of Hotel Management course. The Trust has added one more course, i.e. B.Sc. Nursing Post-Certificate Course in the College of Nursing from 1990.
The year 1991 saw the Trust inaugurating for the first time in Karnataka, a degree course in Physiotherapy (B.P.T.). Another degree course B.Sc. Speech and Hearing, was begun in the year 1991, making this college the second of its kind. The need for starting courses at a higher levels was felt and the Trust started the M.Sc. Nursing course from the year 1992-1993. The Post Graduate Degree course in Hospital Management, was added to the existing courses in the year 1993-94. In the year 1994-95 one more course, Diploma in General Nursing was started. The year 1995 also marked the establishment of a degree course in Radiography. A year later, a course leading to a Diploma in General Nursing commenced. Then, a Master’s degree course in Speech & Hearing was started in 1995-96 & it became the second college to introduce this course in Karnataka. The degree course in Medical Lab Technology was started in the year 1996-97 and Master of Social Work course was instituted in the year 1999-2000.
All these courses are run in different colleges of the Trust having its own multi-storied building with spacious classrooms, up-to-date laboratories, modern equipment and the best libraries. Senior experienced and qualified faculty members have been appointed to teach these courses.

The declaration of Dr.M. V. Shetty Memorial Trust was made on the 15th of October 1985 at Mangalore between the founder Dr. M. Ramgopal Shetty and the 3 Trustees viz. Dr.M.Rampoal Shetty, Sri. K. Muthaya Shetty and Mrs. Leelavathi M. Shetty. The Trustees became the promoters of the Trust and the Trust deed was registered in Mangalore under the name Dr.M. V. Shetty Memorial Trust vide no. 35/1985-86 on dated 17.10.1985.
Late Sri. K. Muthaya Shetty – Founder President of the Trust
Mr. K. Muthaya Shetty was born on 30th December 1931. After his education he was employed in Hindustan Lever Ltd. and later on he became the Managing Director of Mysore Sales International Ltd. In 1975 he became the chairman of Marketing Consultants and Agencies Ltd. He became the chairman of Mysore Cosmetics Ltd. for the period 1982 to 1985 and was the chairman of Mysore Chrome Tanning Co. Ltd. from 1983 to 1985. Later in 1987 he became the Managing Director of M.S. Rammaiah Marketing till 1990 and later proceeded to became the Resident Director of Chamundi Power Corporation Ltd. in 1992. Mr. Shetty also served as a Director on the boards of Karnataka soaps and Detergent Ltd. , Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation Ltd., Karnataka State Fisheries Development Corporation Ltd., Karnataka State Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd., Nippon Electronics Ltd and Karnataka Implements and Machinery Co. Ltd. He was married to Mrs. Usha Shetty and he was blessed with two daughters, one of them is an Architect.

Dr. M. Ramgopal Shetty was born on 12th June 1945 in Mangalore. His early education was at St. Aloysius High School, Mangalore. He completed MBBS & MS at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore in 1969 & 1973 respectively. Dr. Shetty went to U.K. under Vascular Fellowship and was trained in Vascular Surgery. On his return from U.K., he joined Kasturba Medical College as Asst. Professor and remained there till 1989. He then took up the task of looking after Dr. M.V. Shetty Memorial Trust and devoted himself to it completely.
Since 1979, he has been the Vascular Surgeon in the Government District Hospital, Mangalore. Besides, he is involved in the field of University Education as member of Academic Council & Syndicate of Mangalore University and has been elected as its member for four terms from 1982. He was instrumental in introducing many vocational courses such as Physiotherapy, Speech & Hearing and Hospital Administration, etc. under the Mangalore University, for the first time in Karnataka State.
He has been a keen sports enthusiast and conducted the first Satellite ATP Tournament in Mangalore in 1987, which was a huge success. He was also responsible for conducting All India Inter-University Tennis Tournaments under Mangalore University.
He is married to Prof. Hima Urmila Shetty, who is a Professor in English Literature and has two daughters.
Late Mrs. Leelavathi Shetty – Founder Trustee
Late Mrs. Leelavathi Shetty - Founder Trustee, was born on 18th September 1919 and breathed her last on 25th September 1999. She had her early education at Tellicherry, Kerala and moved on to Madras to graduate in Arts from the Queen Mary's College.
In 1942, she was married to Dr. M.V. Shetty and they settled in Mangalore. She was a housewife who was keen on social work and was a life member of the Mahila Sabha and Bhagini Samaj. She was involved in activities of the Cheshire Home, Mangalore along with her husband.
She was a Founder Trustee of Dr. M.V. Shetty Memorial Trust and wholeheartedly took part in its activities till the end.

The trust is managed by the Secretary who is an executive officer of the Trust and in-charge of all the administrative work of the Trust.
Dr. Shetty had his education at St. Aloysius High School, Mangalore. He completed M.B.B.S and M.S. degree education at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore in 1969 and 1973. Later he went to U.K. on Vascular fellowship to get training in vascular surgery. On his return from U.K. he joined K.M.C. as Asst. Professor in Surgery and worked there till 1989.
He was a member of both the academic council and Syndicate of Mangalore University of several terms and has contributed very much in the field of University education. He founded Dr.M.V.Shetty Memorial Trust and through the Trust he was instrumental in introducing many vocational courses like Physiotherapy, Speech & Hearing, Hospital Administration etc. under the Mangalore University. Under his able guidance and Administration the Trust manages 10 different graduate and post graduate courses affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore and Mangalore University, Mangalore run in six different colleges.

Dr. Jayarama Hegde, M.Sc.MS.(USA),Ph.D. Administrative Officer: An experienced educationist, worked as Registrar Evaluation of Mangalore University and experienced in undergraduate and post graduate administration. Dr. Hegde travelled widely in different countries and experienced in research field and he has published several papers in indian and international journals. After attaining superannuation Dr.Hegde joined the trust as an Administrative Officer (Administration).

Mr. Shridhar Shetty, Finance Officer:
The financial standing of the Trust is controlled by the Finance Officer. Before joining the Trust, Mr. Shetty has worked in various official capacities managing the finance of various industrial establishments in Mangalore. The fund canalizing, bank transactions and various expenditures of the Trust are smartly monitored by him and his team of workers.
